Theme: Business & Science: Sustainable use and protection of the seas in North and Baltic Sea

June 15, 2018 Kiel Science Center (Ministry of Economy, Transport, Labor, Technology and Tourism)

In cooperation with the Cluster of Excellence “Ocean of the Future” and the Northern Maritime Cluster (Schleswig-Holstein Branch), the state initiative “Future Sea” invited to jointly identify research needs, concrete innovation projects and new business models for protection and sustainable development on the use of the seas.
These projects and projects should contribute to achieving the good environmental status of our seas required by the MSFD.

Information about the program

The extensive launch of the Maritime Coordinator highlighted the importance of this initiative and its support from research and industry. The brief impulse lectures on the respective later working groups brought the participants to a good working basis at the well-attended event.

Depending on the fields of action of the individual participants, new projects and projects were discussed, developed and presented in the various working groups.

Theme specific workshops:

  • Environmentally friendly ships and ports (reduction of emissions (noise and pollutants), wash waters, etc.)
  • Waste in the sea (avoidance of garbage entries, reduction of microplastic particles entry, etc.)
  • Contaminated sites at the Meet (dealing with ammunition, etc.)
  • Species, biotopes and biodiversity (protection of migratory and migratory species, etc.)

This variety of ideas now has to be worked out in project sketches and presented to the Federal Ministry.

We are looking forward to the new projects for the model region and look forward to further workshops to elaborate the specific topics.
